HBO’s Game of Thrones is one of the most famous series today. And with the recent debut of the new season, we all already know many of the main reasons for the success of the series: the alliances, the struggle for power, the fantastic, the violence and the shock of knowing that none of the characters (not even the protagonists!) they are safe from the brute medieval reality.

The power of Game of Thrones is undeniable in drawing parallels with our current society and its problems. When we look closely at the plot of the series, we can see the reflections of our own coexistence.

We can learn several things by analyzing its history and the series can bring valuable lessons in the most diverse areas. And when it comes to the digital medium? Digital Marketing, called “new marketing”, is based on tactics made online to attract new businesses and strengthen your brand identity. And Content Marketing enters this move as one of the main aspects for the success of Digital Marketing.

In Game of Thrones, we learn about war plans and the battle for dominance over the 7 kingdoms. So, how can we adapt these ideas to our reality? What strategies can we learn from Game of Thrones about content marketing?

Check out 5 incredible strategies that the series taught us about Content Marketing:

(and oh, you can read it: this post has no spoilers!)

1. Form good alliances

This first strategy is basic in the series world: without the right alliances, you can die and lose all the power you once dreamed of having. In Content Marketing it works the same way (but with lesser consequences, of course): it is impossible to survive alone in the midst of digital marketing.

Make partners, create a good engagement with your audience, have loyal customers who will always look at your brand with confidence. Abuse this strategy and use it to your advantage: do webinars together, exchange guest posts between partner blogs and also invest in collaboration in the production of rich materials such as e-books, whitepapers and infographics, for example. That way, you will always have a good fan base, customers and partners ready to leverage and help your page and your business grow.

2. Build a good army

Having an army of capable people with diverse talents is essential to survive in the Game of Thrones. And in Content Marketing too. Form a team of trained professionals that you trust. Invest in creating a well-structured team focused on achieving the company’s goals, which has a thirst for knowledge and always seeks to achieve the best results.

Like Daenerys, always know how to discover your team’s weaknesses and high points and explore it to your advantage. THE khaleesi created a team of followers around you ready to do everything possible for her to get her crown – and you should also want a team ready to meet all the demands necessary for the success of your business.

3. Stay informed and be prepared

In Game of Thrones, much of the power is concentrated in two unusual characters: Varys and Pinky. They don’t have a lot of money or a powerful family. The weapon and source of its power is quite simple: information. Always attentive to what is happening in the 7 kingdoms, they manage to manipulate the environment so that it works the way they want.

Do the same in your Content Marketing strategy: always be connected to world trends and stay up to date. Always try to know what your competition is doing and prepare yourself for a possible change in strategy. Get your team ready for a possible social media crisis and have goals ready for the future. Success with Content Marketing is not something that happens overnight: it takes time and patience. Plan, plan, plan!

4. Create a budget (and don’t exceed it!)

“A Lannister always pays its debts”.

If there’s one thing that the Lannisters taught us throughout the series, it’s with money, power comes. And that spending without controls can have disastrous consequences for your war strategy. But take it easy: Content Marketing doesn’t have to be expensive or exaggerated.

Apply the concept of Fail Fast: Find out quickly which methods you’re using are having problems or have not brought the expected benefit. Have a budget prepared and don’t waste time and money on campaigns and strategies that haven’t shown good results – invest in what you know works for you and your business.

As with the other strategies we cite from Digital Marketing, always keep in mind that you have the possibility to test what works and what doesn’t – so focus on your income. Create documents, tables and keep track of what you’re spending on your strategy.

5. Stay focused on your goals

And lastly: stay focused on your team and on the goals that your company wants to achieve. Losing your mind and giving in to the ego or decisions made on impulse, without accurate data analysis, can cost you your business (or your head, as we’ve seen many times in Game of Thrones!). Stay attentive and rational to market demands.

The world of Marketing can be very chaotic, with new information and posts springing up from all corners of the world, and if you don’t pay attention you can miss out on great opportunities. Don’t let this situation interfere with your strategy: stay organized and do what you know works. Do like Margaery Tyrell: don’t let anything get in the way of conquering your kingdom. Know how to deal with problems and adversities and don’t deviate from your main objective.

With these tips we can guarantee that doing quality Content Marketing will be much easier and more productive.
