Knowing the main features of the search pages (SERPs), in addition to the most important resources and tools, you can create a strategy to increase positions and increase the visibility of your website or blog.
First of all, it is important that you know that search engines have been around since 1993 and that Wandex was the one who started the history of these resources, which have had an incredible evolution since then.
Now, let’s talk concretely about the features and characteristics of Google’s search pages.
What are the elements of the search pages?
Most search engines are quite similar.
The conventional elements, according to their position from top to bottom, are:
- search box: place where the text or image that we want to search for is inserted. It is located at the highest part of the search engine.
- vertical navigation: guides that allow you to filter searches according to the type of content we need (images, videos, news, among others). In addition, it is possible to refine the results by region or date of publication.
- results information: the number of results and the time it took the search engine to find them.
- PPC advertising (Pay Per Click): paid ads to get positions in the SERPs and get more clicks.
- organic results: all the results derived from the algorithmic processing of the information and that allow to position a website following an SEO strategy.
On Google search pages, we may also occasionally find a section with images related to the search in the results information, as long as the visual content is relevant to the user.
Why is it important to know the structure of the search pages?
The best part of knowing the structure and functionality of SERPs is that, in this way, we can work on effective SEO strategies to position our blog or website on Google and other search engines.
For example, depending on the keywords established for a post, the SERPs activate some specific features that help us to scale the results, including displaying them twice on the first page.
Next, we’ll show you what the features of Google’s search pages are.
Features of Google search pages
As we already mentioned, SERPs’ resources can give extra visibility to their competitors. Something that, without a doubt, is beneficial for your company. Know what they are!
Answer boxes are straightforward and concise results for searching for a keyword. They appear at the top of the search pages, above the first organic position and are called “Zero position”.
They provide the user with brief information related to their search, without necessarily inserting one of the results.
Something very similar to the previous one, with the difference that it is used to show lists or step guides to follow.
These are the links that appear below the site description within the SERPs. Its purpose is to provide the user with relevant information about a website when they are looking for something specific.
There is no direct way to activate them organically, but if you have a well-optimized site, Google may consider it. If you rely on the Google Adwords service, up to 4 links can be displayed.
These are the graphs that show a detailed description about the keyword, offering relevant information about a public place, company, schedules, among others.
For example, if you search for Google on Google’s own search site, a box with information about the company, the CEO, the year of foundation and other related information will appear on the right.
When entering a keyword, the user receives several highlighted news on the topic, in addition to the organic results.

Also called Short-Click, it is a box in which a list of queries related to the keyword is displayed, under the heading “Related searches”.
Thus, SERP seeks to identify the user’s intention to avoid having to show other results due to excessive advertising, long loading times, lack of quality of the content, among others.
It offers a specific definition of the keyword that the user uses, as well as a link to the website.
It is interesting when it comes to defining a specific term and helps to position posts and websites that have good SEO practices.
Within the SERPs functionalities is the one that shows a graphical answer to a question.
For example, if you search for a keyword similar to “how is the weather”, Google will show you a graphical report of the weather for that day and the next, according to your geographic location.
How to identify resources and what tools to use for analysis?
Each resource is displayed according to a search intent. For example:
- know more about a subject;
- discover specific data;
- take some action;
- perform some action through a device (cell phone, Google Home, tablet);
- go to a website;
- search for locations.
And, according to the search intent, there are tools to measure or visualize the classification of the keyword in general.
Services like SEMRush or Ahrefs provide detailed information to reach and measure the functionality of Google and other search engines.
What do they offer?
- provide information about the resources of the SERPs that are being occupied by their competition;
- find keywords that activate the SERPs functionalities, in addition to monitoring the position of your site;
- detect opportunities to take advantage of the features;
- optimize the features you want to take advantage of.
The choice between one or the other will depend on the objectives and needs that your website or blog has. But in general, both are excellent tools for optimizing and measuring your SEO strategies for Google’s search pages.
