In this context, it is important to say that the realization of the matrix involves several internal and external issues of the organization, making the solutions of certain problems more and more frequent, since the adversities will be analyzed according to the important factors of the company.

What are the criteria of the BASICO Matrix?

Next, we will briefly explain each of the six criteria used in the matrix:

  • benefits for the organization (B): corresponds to what impact a given analyzed solution has on the results of the processes. In this case, the objects are to reduce costs and defects and increase production;
  • scope of results (A): represents the total number of company employees who will benefit from the improvements in the projects;
  • employee satisfaction (S): it means the degree of satisfaction that is generated in employees, who have a certain relationship with projects that are being studied to be optimized;
  • necessary investments (I): considers the amount of resources that will be necessary for the improvements of a given process to be duly implemented;
  • external client: degree of impact (C); understands the impacts that the improvements generated in the processes will have in relation to the external client;
  • operationalization: degree of ease (O): finally, it means how a particular improvement will be applied. It involves factors such as social / cultural / legal impediments, mastery of the required technology, resistance to change, simplicity of implementation and ease of use.

Below, after knowing all the factors that should be analyzed to solve the problems, it is time to assign a score, ranging from 1 to 5, for each solution, according to your priorities:

Benefits for the organization:

  • note 5: extremely important for the organization’s business or even essential for the company’s survival;
  • note 4: the benefits are very relevant and can generate technological innovation and profits for the business;
  • note 3: represents a reasonable impact in relation to the performance of the changes that were made;
  • note 2: brings some operational benefit, which can be considered and quantified;
  • note 1: the benefit has little impact, although it contributes in some way to the company.

Scope of results

  • note 5: brings a result that impacts from 70% to 100% from the company;
  • note 4: covers 40% to 70% of the organization;
  • note 3: it covers reasonably, from 20% to 40% of the company;
  • note 2: it allows a small coverage, from 5% to 20% of the company;
  • note 1: minimum coverage, maximum 5% of the organization.

Employee satisfaction

  • note 5: degree of satisfaction quite marked;
  • note 4: relevant satisfaction, and is capable of showing recognition in the day-to-day work;
  • note 3: the satisfaction that can be noticed is average and is observed by colleagues at work;
  • note 2: already here, the satisfaction that can be noticed is average, but it is not noticed by colleagues at work;
  • note 1: the degree of satisfaction is small, but somehow it can contribute for the company to develop.

Necessary investment

  • note 5: there is a minimum expenditure and the company already has most of the resources or else it can get them easily;
  • note 4: there are some costs within the area’s budget and there is also a need to use some of its own resources;
  • note 3: expenses are made beyond the budget of the area, but still within the budget of the organization;
  • note 2: there must be a need to approve resources from the board, as it is necessary to reallocate funds;
  • note 1: expenses are well beyond the estimated budgets and there is a need to carry out a new strategic planning.

External client: degree of impact

  • note 5: in this case, there is a very relevant impact on the company’s image together with your customers;
  • note 4: here, there are great and direct effects on the support processes;
  • note 3: understands good reflexes in the support processes;
  • note 2: there is little impact in relation to the final processes with consumers;
  • note 1: there is no reflection on the organization’s image with the client.

Operationalization: degree of ease

  • note 5: the company has many facilities for the development of operations, since the technology is already used;
  • note 4: it is easy to develop the operation and there may be a need for help from third parties, but they are available on the market;
  • note 3: there is an average facility, in which case it depends on the knowledge of technology and also on the availability of the market to offer the resources that are necessary;
  • note 2: little ease in carrying out operations, depending on numerous changes in the company’s culture;
  • note 1: here, operations are more difficult to perform, because there is an excess in relation to the limits of authority of the organization.

After understanding all the criteria of the Basic Matrix, in order to classify the solutions, it will be necessary to set up a table with the items (B, A, S, I, C, O) in the lines, as well as the grades that will be given (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) in the columns, in order to form the matrix.

You can and should fit each solution in the BASICO Matrix, according to the degree of importance of each of these requirements. That means that each solution must have its analysis done separately, in order to take as factors B, A, S, I, C, O.

After analyzing all the solutions, you must prioritize the one with the highest score when adding all the attributes. In the case of a tie, highlight item C (customers).

BASICO Matrix Application Example

To make the application of the Basic Matrix even clearer, let’s take a practical example. Visualize the following question: what is the main problem in the purchasing sector of a certain company?

In this case, we can list the following solutions:

  • monitor the purchase order;
  • eliminates some bureaucracies;
  • place orders as soon as they are requested;
  • buy products from other suppliers.

Then, for each of the factors, we can assign the grades. Suppose that in each item of B, A, S, I, C, O, the solution “follow the purchase order” received the highest marks, followed by “eliminate some bureaucracy”, “place orders as soon as they are requested” , and, finally, “buy products from other suppliers”.

In this example, therefore, we can highlight that tracking the purchase order is the most viable solution to be applied.
