Microsoft PowerPoint is arguably the most popular software used for presentations. You are likely to see presentations on this resource being used for everything and everyone, from interns to company marketing managers.
In this post, we’ll help you get started with Microsoft PowerPoint. You will learn how to create a presentation in a time you never thought possible and with quality. We’ll also cover some best practices to make sure everything gets done the easy way.

Step by step: how to put together a PowerPoint presentation?
At first, let’s see what the 5 steps are for you to create a Power Point presentation from scratch.
1. Choose between a blank presentation and a template
When you start a new PowerPoint file, you can create a blank presentation or from a template.
Blank presentations allow you to apply your own style, but this can be a lengthy process. Templates can give your presentation a uniform style, but may not meet your exact needs:
- you can edit any aspect of a model, so feel free to choose one that matches your vision and adjust it as you see fit;
- you can apply themes to your project later, after adding content. Click the tab Design and select a theme. It will be applied immediately to your project. You can undo it (Ctrl + Z) or revert to a blank theme if you don’t like it;
- you can access templates on the tab Archive. click in New and then browse through the available templates. You can also download additional templates (we’ll talk about this later).
2. Create the title for your slide
Write a good title it’s important, because it’s the first thing your audience will see. It should be easy to read and give a basic overview of the topic of the presentation. Most presenters will include the personal or group name in the title as well.
3. Add slides to the presentation
Press Ctrl + M for a new slide. A blank slide will be added after the slide you are currently on. The slide will contain a title box and a text box. You can choose to use them or insert your own objects using the tab Insert.
When adding a text box, you can click and drag to make it the size you want. You can then adjust this later, by grabbing one of the corners with the cursor and then clicking and dragging again.
You can click on any text box and start typing to add text to your presentation, and format the text as you would in Word, with the formatting options available on the tab Start.
4. Navigate your presentation
Use the frame on the left side of the window to quickly scroll through the slides. Clicking on any of them will open that slide so you can edit it. You can click the tab Outline to see an outline of your presentation. Each slide will be labeled by the title.
5. Check out the presentation
You can get a basic idea of the flow of your presentation at this point by pressing F5 to start the slide show. Click with the mouse to advance the slides. Use the preview slide show to get an idea of how long the presentation is and how well information flows from one slide to the next.

How to make a good presentation in Power Point?

Avoid using text blocks
“But presentations don’t need texts?” – you may be wondering. The answer is yes, but for a presentation to be good, it is necessary that the texts correspond to the titles, subtitles and some small notes.
You know that presentation of a marketing event in which the speaker presents a lot of slides with texts and spends the entire lecture reading them? Boring, isn’t it?
It is also the case of presentations that have only texts, but differ in relation to what the speaker says, so that now you are reading the text on the slide, now you are listening to what the person is saying. Distressing, right?
For this reason, just as it is not legal to have large blocks of text in content marketing materials, for example, with slides, it is no different. So, avoid using very long blocks of text occupying each slide. Try to use it in a clear, short and objective way.
Be careful when using slide transitions or animations
PowerPoint has a very good feature to make your presentations more interesting and dynamic: transitions and animations.
Transitions allow the transition from one slide to another to be different than usual. So, you can insert an animation, making the next slide skip up or materialize over the previous one, for example.
Animations have a very similar feature. With them, you can animate the items that are on the slide. So, if you want to write something like “let’s make email marketing results go up” and make that sentence go up on the screen to illustrate its meaning, just animate it.
However, care must be taken when performing these functions. To use the transition, just go to the tab Transitions and choose Transition effects.
On the other hand, to animate an object, all you need to do is click on it and choose the function Animate that PowerPoint will show you how you want to animate it: making it go up, down, enter on the right or left, appear on the screen etc.

So, it is an effective and more discreet resource than taking notes on a piece of paper that will be noticed by the public.
