What is a title tag?
The title tag is a markup of the HTML code (
Some examples of where this title appears written are:
- in the browser tab;
- at Search Engine Results Page (SERP), the search results page of search engines, such as Google and Bing;
- in social media posts, when we share a link.
In other words, the text included in this tag allows the user to identify the type of content he can expect within that page.
At least, this is its main purpose, although some website owners use the awful practice of choosing a title tag to attract attention to a subject when the topic of the page is totally different.
Why include a title tag?
If your page does not have a title tag, the browser will probably show the name of the HTML file.
In the case of social networks, the message and title may not be found, compromising engagement when their content is shared.
With regard to search engines, the absence of a title eventually causes the algorithm of these systems to choose to display a header, part of the text on the page itself or other related information.
Because of this randomness, it is more interesting to make headlines with the words you really want your target audience to see and insert them properly in your title tag.
However, it is worth remembering that including a title tag does not mean that search engines will display it exactly as you defined it.
It may be that they adjust the way the title appears in the results, in order to present a keyword of the user’s search, for example.
What is the ideal title tag size?
You have probably noticed that the title of several pages listed in the search results appears clipped, with an ellipsis at the end.
As there is a character limit for search engines to display these titles on Serp, the content of very extensive title tags ends up being reduced.
To give you an idea, in the case of Google, the title must be contained in a width of 600 pixels.
If the characters do not fit this restriction, the system applies the reduction.
One way to visualize this particularity is to notice how the space that the term “AAA” occupies is larger than “iii”.
Note that some characters are wider than others, especially when they are capitalized.
The problem is that this can cut out words relevant to your website and your brand, changing the intended direction of the title and even impairing the volume of Serp clicks to your page.
Therefore, the most recommended is that the length of the title tag does not exceed 60 characters.
Since the limit is based on pixels, as we have already explained, this number offers a good margin.

Pass on this information in a few words and use the most important keywords on the webpage, but be careful not to be too generic.
Titles that are too short and do not explain much are hardly attractive to people.
Enter the keyword on the left
Inserting the keyword as close as possible to the beginning of the title can attract more users’ attention, since the central information that describes your page is probably one of the first things they look for in each of the Serp results.
With more relevant headlines, you’ll increase your chances of getting more clicks from search engines and increasing traffic to your site.
Include your brand name
If it is possible to include your brand name in the title tag without affecting the 60 character limit, try to do so at the end of the title.
This measure helps the user to quickly identify who that page belongs to and has a lot of appeal with those who already know your company.
An example of this pattern would be: “Page title | Your brand”.
Avoid duplicate titles
It is also worth taking care not to create more than one page with the same title because it shows Google and other search engines that your site works with unique and relevant content.
Indications that you have pages or part of them duplicate are a bad sign for search engines, which can cause a penalty in the positioning of your pages.
