If you are in the world of advertising or marketing, you have probably heard the word “deadline” a number of times. Otherwise, you may not be so familiar with the term that, in London, is present in the life of each and every worker: the famous deadlines!
Deadline is that word that gets chilling, depending on the context. It is like a busy day at work that, hours before reaching the end, is marked by that deadline “for yesterday”.
The term, which comes from English and has gained strength, mainly in London advertising and marketing offices, has a simple meaning and reaches every worker.
In addition to clarifying the concept of deadline, today’s post aims to help you deal with it better and anticipate that negative surprises become increasingly rare in everyday life.
After all, what is deadline?
Situations like those mentioned at the beginning of the post are common in many people’s lives. Discovering that the deadline for that task is for the end of the same day or, at the latest, the very next morning can generate despair and anxiety.
The word, however inevitable in the routine, is commonly associated with negative and boring reactions on the part of the worker – but it doesn’t have to be that way!
The deadline is nothing less than the famous deadline. Its meaning, when translated to the letter, can be something like “death line” (remember the negative connotations we mentioned earlier?).
What is its importance?
It is inevitable: the job market is driven by deadlines.
If the deadline did not exist, the workflow would be completely compromised and deliveries would be of lower quality.
Each person works in a particular way. If we were to rely on the personal deadlines of all the workers in a company, it would be very difficult – almost impossible, perhaps – to make the demands follow a correct path.
Within this mess, even, several tasks would be forgotten and lost.
The deadline is important for align the need to deliver a specific demand to the progress of all work.
We know that every task needs to be delivered to someone, but we don’t always remember that defining “when” is essential. When there are well-designed processes, demands are aligned in advance, teams are allocated calmly and, at the end of the day, the possibilities of a monstrous deadline appear are reduced!

Now that you understand the meaning of deadline and understand the reasons why it is so important, it’s time to discover some very simple ways to not miss the deadline.
Always be in touch with the team
Much of the abusive deadlines could have been avoided had there been greater clarity in communication between the team.
Often, by avoiding meetings and conversations with the team – or, on the other hand, getting lost in meetings and conversations too much – you will lose a flow of important information for the future.
For example, it is possible to predict the arrival of demands from a simple alignment conversation. That way, even if the demand and the deadline are not yet officialized, you can reserve some time in the calendar to plan that delivery!
Getting lost amid simultaneous deadlines is much easier than you think, and much of the confusion can be justified by the lack of organization of tasks.
A good form of organization is, at the beginning of each period – it can be week, fortnight or month -, select all demands and organize the deadline for each one.
After separating them by priority, it’s time to analyze how your days will be distributed.
Turn each task into a to-do list and, whenever you finish something, mark that step as done. That way, in addition to knowing what has been done and what has not been done, you will have a great feeling of “duty accomplished” whenever you deliver something.
There are great organizing apps that can help you do that, but the good old paper schedule is still a great option!
It is important to keep in mind that, like your personal life, your professional life is made up of phases. It is common to live “horrible” phases in relation to deadlines and to have the feeling that every day will be endless.
Failure to meet all imposed deadlines is normal. So we shouldn’t be frustrated when the situation happens – as long as it doesn’t become routine.
If your tasks are always late, there may be some problem at work: be it lack of organization, time management or external factors such as a greater volume of demands than you can bear.
Stay calm when faced with a surprise deadline
Did a demand arise for the same day at 6 pm? Do not freak out!
As daunting as the request for a last-minute task can be, the key to success is to stay calm and carry out that demand as if you had a full month to do it.
This does not mean that it will be done slowly, but with tranquility. Always keep in mind that the deadline is urgent, but don’t get things running.
If you do, you can be sure that the result will not be of the expected quality, which can damage even the impression that your superiors or other colleagues have of you.
Before performing the task, make sure the deadline is realistic
Remember what we talked about above about being in constant dialogue with the team?
We like to think like this: terms are negotiable, but terms negotiated are not renegotiable at all! It is a somewhat confusing phrase, but it summarizes in a few words what we will explain next.
If before making a commitment to deliver that demand on that date, there is a conversation about the deadline, everything is fine: people will probably understand your point, unless it is very urgent deadlines.
The problem is getting the date, confirming that everything is fine and, the day before delivery (or even on the day!), You turn to someone asking for a change on time. The attitude does not go well and will not be liked by others.
When we learn to deal with the deadline, it is not just the work routine that turns into something more successful: your body and mind will thank you very much, since stress at work directly interferes with your mental health.
