Having a fast website is increasingly important. Today, more than 50% of Google’s traffic is via mobile devices. At the same time, mobile device users are less likely to wait for heavy pages to load, either due to data consumption (mobile Internet is still very expensive) or the multitasking that the smartphone provides.

While your site takes a long time to load, the person has already received two messages on WhatsApp or decided to call someone. There, navigation on your site, if not very important, will be discarded.

Some ecommerce features can help you with the task of having a faster website, but remember: having a fast website also involves manual work.

And of course, it’s not just your website that should be fast, you also need to be ready to respond instantly, in real time. For this, be sure to check the differentials of using Websites Are Us’s professional online chat on your page.

3 ways to have a faster website

Tip number 3: Discover heavy files

For search engines, each page is analyzed separately in terms of “speed”. If your Home Page is fast but all of your product pages are slow, you will probably have a harder time positioning for queries (search terms) that point to your products.

That’s why it’s important to do a general scan of your site to find heavy files on all pages.

There are several tools for this. For small sites (up to 500 pages) the best is Screaming Frog. With it you discover several aspects related to SEO on your website simply by typing your URL in the text field and clicking Start.

Screaming Frog

For larger sites, it is recommended that you have a service that does this scan in the cloud, without needing a physical machine of yours for that.

In that case, SEM Rush or Deep Crawl are good options. In the current plan the two tools cost, respectively, U $ 999 and U $ 849 (New Year’s Eve promotion, according to the website). Deep Crawl is more focused on Factor Analysis on Page than SEM Rush, which is broader, also bringing data from ads, competitors and more.

Wonderful, now you know what are the heaviest files on your site. First, analyze the real need for these files: whether they are essential for your business model and for your user? If so, obviously, keep them. Otherwise, study the possibility of removing them or exchanging them for lighter files.

Tip number 2: Compress images

Let’s say that in Tip 3 you have discovered that your product images weigh more than 5MB because they were taken by a professional photographer.

Remember: ideally, pages should load in less than 2 seconds. So, considering a 2MB / S internet (4G standard), you need your page to have a maximum of 4MB.

However, we must also consider other factors with TTFB (Time to First Byte). So, try to keep your page close to 2MB, because unfortunately 4G still doesn’t reach 100% of the population and not even 100% of the contracted speed.

Therefore, consider having small and light images in the categories where there is a showcase of images and larger images on the product page, highlighting any specific attribute of the product that is worth showing.

The tool to be used here is Caesium. Desktop or web software that allows you to upload an image and configure it to compress the image. The walkthrough is as follows:

1) Click on the first button and then select the path of your image

Cesium - Step 1

2) Select the image and configure, in the lower panel, the compression, proportion and destination options of the image

Cesium - Step 2

3) Click on the lightning bolt icon and wait for the success message.

Cesium - Step 3

(Note that in this case the change was from a 9MB image to a 47KB image after compression. If it is a thumbnail of a post, for example, it is a valid change).

Tip number 1: Server and Hosting

There is no point in having light files and compressed images if your server goes down or is slow. So, unfortunately, it is impossible to go through this part without investing a little more.

Fortunately, with the popularization of cloud servers, there are options that cost $ 5 a month and can be scaled as your traffic increases.

The most famous options are Digital Ocean, Cloudways, Configr and Amazon. (Stay tuned to our blog that we will soon post on the subject, detailing 13 options for hosting SME websites).

The more powerful your server, the faster it delivers data from your site to your user’s browser and the faster the loading of all pages.
