In this article I come to explain how find the best keywords for your website.
Getting relevant keywords that rank is not complicated if you use the right tools
If you call your cousin the one in town, the one who lives in a village in Albacete, he will probably tell you that he already has a website and that he is doing the business of his life with it.
If you knock on the door of the neighbor downstairs, I will surely tell you that he has a blog and that he is generating succulent passive income.
In short: everyone has websites. And why do we want a website? To transmit, sell, read to us … And for that to happen, yes or yes traffic has to arrive to the same.
For this we can make a million-dollar link building strategy, spend a fortune in the traditional advertising sector or do what usually does not have so many resources: hit the key, create quality content and start to position organically with the words key that interests us.
And what are these? Yes, I have one bike shopare probably “buy a bike”, “online bikes”, “buy a bike online” and the like.
But beware, if we position “bicycles online” before “buy bicycle” and it turns out that the first keyword has 1,000 searches per month and the second 5,000, what a lost opportunity, right? With this article we explain a complete keyword research process so you don’t leave absolutely nothing on the way.
Before starting the process we will give you a brief explanation of the tools that we will use.
- SEMrush: the queen of SEO tools. With it we will spy on our competition, we will see related keywords, coincidences, positioning history …
- AdWords Keyword Planner: here we will make consultations to, so to speak, the database of keywords that we will give as valid. If this planner says that “online bikes” has 1,000 searches per month, we will believe it.
- Google Search Console: The old Google Webmaster Tools will be used in case our website is not totally new.
- Übersuggest: online web service that will serve as Perfect complement to all the above tools.
- Our supreme intelligence: to finish completing what we have not removed before. Common sense!
Process to obtain the best keywords
The more sugar, the sweeter. In our case, the more time spent, the better results.
What we are going to do is open a excel workbook and prepare to complete sheets, which we will later accumulate in the same tab.
From there will come our results.
1- Current positioning with SEMrush
We enter this powerful tool and put our supposed domain, pepebicis.com.
We see what we have positioned –If pepebicis.com has a certain trajectory, there will be something– and we export the table, which we will load in our first Excel sheet. In the table we will see a lot of data, but we will keep the keyword and the search volume.
We will add an additional column at the beginning in which we will put the tool from which each keyword comes out.
We will repeat this process on the following sheets.
Then we will go to historical from our website and we will download the keywords from last month. And the same for him last month, so that we have accumulated our words positioned according to SEMrush of the last three months. We already have three Excel sheets, which we condense into one, putting the words of the most recent month above.
2- Competition in SEMrush
Unless we have the best idea in history, we suspect that whatever keywords you want to position will have some competition for it.
The ideal to know who is going to become our enemy is search in Google –Activate the incognito mode! – the keywords that we can guess will have more searches and see who comes first.
So we take your domain, put it in SEMrush and download your current organic ranking.
Do you want to add more sugar to the cake?
Instead of a competition, choose ten.
Do you want to put the icing on it? Download the keywords they use to position themselves in SEM, which sometimes also give clues. Accumulate all this in a new Excel tab and go for the next one.
3- Related keywords and matches in SEMrush
To end SEMrush, we go to the list that we have downloaded before our domain – the history of the last three months – and we select the five keywords with the most monthly searches.
And now, one by one, we will search for related keywords and phrase matches with the two homonymous sections of the tool.
That is, if the keywords ranked with the most searches were “cheap bikes”, “cheap mountain bikes”, “cheap bikes”, “online bikes” and “cheap road bikes”, we looked for the related for the five keywords and we download the data to a new Excel tab. And the same for phrase match.
4- URL of our website in the AdWords Keyword Planner
Turning to the famous Google Keyword Planner, we download the ideas that it gives us when entering the URL of our website and we put the table in a new Excel sheet, which is already starting to populate.
5- Ideas from keywords in the Planner
Same site, different field: instead of entering the URL, in the upper field we put our five TOP keywords; that is, the ones we have used before for matches and related.
What the Planner will do is give us all the keywords in the Google database that it considers to have something to do with those entered by us. We download the files and put them in a new separate tab.
6- Queries in Google Search Console
With what searches do people access our website? From here you can also get keywords through a tube. We go to Search Traffic / Search Analysis and download the consultations of the last 90 days.
Once entered in the Excel we will see that they do not have the search volume, so we will have to take the queries to the Planner and get this data. Once we have the final and complete list, we leave it in Excel and go to übersuggest.
Here we will make use of the famous five TOP keywords. We will introduce them one by one in this tool and it will give us its variants.
But beware, the same thing happens with Search Console; We don’t know how many searches each suggested word has, so we go through the Planner and we downloaded the file back to the last Excel sheet with raw data.
8- Join all keywords on a single sheet
Collected the data, we unite all on a single sheet. We will put first most important; that is, the keywords that we already have positioned on the web (point 1).
Then those of the competition (point 2), those proposed by the Planner for our website (point 4), the related and SEMrush matches (point 3), the ideas from the recurring TOP keywords (point 5), the Search Console queries (point 6) and finally the übersuggest keywords (point 7).
The image above is an example, so you can see everything that would appear in the table. Obviously, after adding all of the above, several thousand rows would appear.
9- Deduplicate the list
Our sheet, with thousands of rows, will consist of a field for the source, one for the keyword and one for the monthly searches. Everything else is removed; we are not interested.
What we will do now will be deduplicate the entire list; that is to say, remove all keywords that have been duplicated by adding words from different sources and leaving, those that exist, as unique. That’s how wonderful Excel is.
10- Filter what does not interest us
With the new list, what we have left is to do work to manini. We can order it so that at the top it shows the keywords with the most searches and go gradually eliminating, the ones that don’t interest us.
Advice: use the filters to select words that you think fit – Filter -> Keyword -> “bike” – and those that you see that do, marks with another color. The ones that don’t, you remove. And so with everything you can think of.
When you finish you will have a list with X words that are serious candidates to be chosen by you. Which ones do you keep?
Using the keyword difficulty MOZ or SEMrush, go see which ones get the best result by putting the search volume, the affinity of the keyword with your website and the difficulty level to position it.
Here each person’s personal judgment enters and you will have to be the one to follow. We get off here.
These are some of the alternatives, there are several more tools you can try how for example keywordtool.io, sistrix.es or answerthepublic.com
Although it seems a bit messy, when you start applying it you will realize its effectiveness and simplicity.
It is laborious, but there are no roses without thorns.
And remember that first of all, although we are automating the process the most important thing is that common sense prevails.
