How to install themes/templates in PrestaShop
The first thing we will do is make a backup of the site, as we mentioned previously. You can perform the backup in the way you prefer, just make sure that it contains the files and database of your store.
Once your store is backed, we will download the theme. You will have to download it to your PC and leave it there for now, in a minute we will be uploading it to the site.
The next thing is to enter the PrestaShop Administrator area. In there, click on Preferences> Themes, this option is in the menu on the left.
Then we click on the “Add new theme” button that appears at the top of the screen. This button allows us to add a new theme in our store.
On the new screen we will see several different methods to add a template to our PrestaShop:
- The first option gives us the possibility to upload the theme from our PC.
- The second is to load it using a URL.
- The third is used to load it from the “themes” folder of the site.
- There is a fourth option that is used to create a new theme, although that is much more going forward.
In this case, we will use the first option, «Import from your computer», so use it to upload the Zip file that contains the template you downloaded. Don’t forget to click on the “Save” button to start the process. Depending on your connection and the weight of the theme, the upload could take a few minutes, so just wait for it to finish. If any error occurs regarding the upload limit, ask your PrestaShop hosting provider to increase the PHP upload limit.
Once the theme is successfully uploaded, we will activate it. For that, enter Preferences> Themes again (if the site does not automatically redirect you there) and look for the new theme you uploaded. Now put the pointer over your new template and click on “Use this theme”.
Now you will be in a new screen where you can customize the theme a little. Here you can choose the modules of the template that you want to activate or deactivate. This, of course, will depend on each theme, so you must configure it in the way that best suits your site. When you finish editing the modules, don’t forget to click Save.
In the next step, depending on the theme, the system may tell you that you must regenerate the store images to adapt to the new template. Right there you will have a button to start the process, although regardless of whether you carry out the process or not, the theme should have already been installed.
And that’s it! Now your new PrestaShop template is 100% active. Enter your site’s index and you should see it fresh and with a new face.
